I'm looking at a mini 14 for home defense. The soft points supposedly have less chance of over penetration for home defense. Do hollow points like the PDX1 and soft points run reliably in these guns? I'm guessing the actions of these are more solid and reliable than an AR.

PDX1 are exceptional hollow point defensive rounds! Pretty much any brand name hollowpoint will work. I use federal Tactical ..........only because they were for sale near me.

The mini 14 is over-gassed from the factory. So, it will reliably shoot, and function with some types of ammo that could Choke in an AR. I have hornady 55 gr. Spire Point ammo for my home defense loads.

Yes, get a mini 14 for self defense. From 20-40 feet away, group size between a mini and an AR will be insignificant. And you will have a reliable carbine that not everyone else on the firing line has.
