Ruger Redhawk 5.5" 44 Magnum

Well several weeks ago, I found at a local pawn shop... and traded a Sig P226 for plus some $$, but to me it was very much worth it. It was dressed with Pachmayr grip which I personally didn't like but will hang onto for the range. It was in great shape for it's 83 circa vintage according to the serial number. I did find a set of vintage stocks for it, which I like a lot better. I've had the speed strips and HKS speed loaders from a Redhawk I owned in the past and had to sell, this one isn't going away and has a permanent home. I'll be finding a proper holster again, as I liked the Galco DAO but I'll see what I find in either a cross draw or chest style holster. Until then, it did come with a nylon holster, which will work for now. But I figure, it was a great trade as the Ruger Redhawks around my parts are few and far in between, and I have good bear loads on stand by.

Nice revolver. I've got a 4" Security Six .357 that I purchased new in 1984 that looks very similar. Although I must say, I like the Pachmayr grips on mine more than the stock ones.

I went out shooting this evening using the stock grips, and we shall see the next time I go out which ones I like most. This trip was just to get the feel of the Redhawk shooting both .44 Special, I can see why Skeeter Skelton loved the .44 Special and .44 Magnum...

I'll be going back out again tomorrow with some friends to the Bigfork Gun Club, and the Redhawk will wear the Pachmayr grip, for this adventure.

Wow, is that a view of your backyard? I miss the mountains of MT. I've got to get back there someday.

You mentioned you're looking for a chest rig. I purchased one for my Smith and Wesson Governor from J&T Holsters and Belts. They do not have the Redhawk listed as one of the models they make holsters for but you could try contacting them to see if they could make one for you. Here's a photo of mine.

Have fun at the range.

Very nice. As you can tell by my name, I'm a big fan of the Redhawk. 44 spl/mag being one of my all time favorite calibers too. I'm sure you'll enjoy that beauty.

Absolutely... can't wait to go shooting again with it.

I might have to hunt one of those down, after I pay off the 6" GP100 have on layaway

I had one that I used for deer hunting in the swamp back in the early '90's.

The Redhawks are hell for stout; but I like the S&W Model 29 and 629 better.

As long as it shoots good for you; that's all that matters.

It's the fact that it's a Ruger with the greatest customer service.. I once bought a used Redhawk that had a canted barrel from being over tightened by production. They couldn't fix it, and said we'd like to build you a new Redhawk 5.5" if that's okay. I snapped that up in a heartbeat and have pretty much stood by them since. And yes this Ruger Redhawk 5.5" that I have now, does shoot as expected no issues on accuracy at all.

The only bear target I had on hand, didn't have a charging bear cutout or poster.. so I was shooting at the vitals that are marked on this archery target. But I pretty much wanted to see how I could group using from the following loads, from mild to wild. Here in NW Montana we do work on bear defensive for the what if.. I say what if because in over 32 yrs of living here, I have never had to go face off with a mad black bear, or charging grizzly bear.

With my arthritis in my thumb joint of my right hand, I'm surprised I had no pain issues or discomfort from the hard recoil from the Underwood 340gr +P+ loads, but I will say that the trigger guard did leave an impression in my middle finger minor discomfort. Distance was from 5 to 7 yards.

6 rounds of 240-gr SWC
6 rounds of 270gr JSP
6 rounds of HSM 305gr Bear Load (warmer on felt recoil)
6 rounds of Underwood 340gr +P+ (harder on felt recoil, but manageable)
Sleeve Carnivore Felidae Brown bear Tree

I'm ordering some bear targets from Alaska, same ones that the Alaska State Parks uses for their training targets bot shot gun and revolver/pistol. Target available HERE
