Problem with SR1911

Hey guys, new to the forum but I joined specifically to get some feedback on an extremely disappointing problem I ran into with my recently-purchased SR1911.

With less than 200 rounds through it, the front sight inexplicably blew off the front of my gun (from the recoil?). I've had it for less than 2 weeks. I'm going to call Ruger ASAP, but I also don't want the same sight if this is a defect that's going to continue to happen. I am going to see if they'll at least meet me halfway on their upgraded night sight. Thoughts on the problem/my actions? Greatly appreciated!

Also, I may add that this gun was a dream to shoot before this happened. I loved everything about it.

I seen a video on youtube that a guy had the same problem [ame]http://youtu.be/4VpOHT3hk9E[/ame]....He sent the gun back to Ruger and they installed a new site on it....Ruger has awesome customer service.
Well, here's my only problem with that:

according to shop ruger, that replacement sight is $6- that tells me it's a cheap part and this is likely to happen again.

They are Novak sites....which are some of the best in the business......I say Ruger will only replace it with the same model.
Update:

Called Ruger this afternoon. I tried to bargain for the green fiber optic sight, but the customer service rep said they are on a 2 month back order.

Regardless, they agreed to replace the part via overnight shipping, said 5-10 business days. According to the service rep, the front sight occasionally gets an air bubble or two during the casting process. Anyways, I expressed concern about another defective part making its way onto my firearm, but he assured me this whole air bubble ordeal is a rarity. Not exactly an A+ answer, but I will say my wait time was only a few minutes and everyone I spoke to was very polite, friendly, and answered all my questions.

Awesome customer service.....they will make it right.....
Glad they were so helpful for you. I think the sr1911 is a great gun and I hate seeing something like that happen
Ace,

I agree with you about the gun - a dream to shoot. I can't imagine anything in $600-$800 range that could be nicer (I found one here in PA for $650). Can't wait to get it back!

That's a good price. After shopping around for a while I was finally able to find one at the same price. For the price I can't think of a better one
Great gun that Sr1911. I really enjoy mine and really hope I don't have that problem

I had an issue with an SR9c and Ruger customer service told me how to fix it over the phone. Have not had a problem with it since. I have fired about 2000 rounds through since. I would deal with them anytime.
Hopefully Ruger will figure this out. It looks like a sight design flaw. The front of the sight rests on the slide in front of the dovetail. When the front of the slide gets hot from multiple firings the heat expansion of the front of the slide pushes the point of the sight off of the dovetail base. The front of the sight needs to have a space between it and the slide to allow for the slides heat expansion.
Finally got to the range and put 50 rounds through my Commander. Grand total of 100 rounds by me and 28 by the Ruger gunsmith who repaired it the first time I sent it back right after I got the gun. Long story short, 128 rounds and the front sight broke off. I have to send it back again. The Ruger sight issue is common, I guess from other posts in this forum. If this keeps up Ruger will have the gun more than me.

Has anyone had a sight that doesn't break?

Mine has been holding on for several thousand rounds.:) Samson mentioned the sight needs a gap to mitigate the effects of heat expansion. Might be something to that. My front sight does have a gap between the slide and front of the sight of .002".
Mine is holding on also. I bought mine used, so no idea what the actual round count is. I have 600 trouble free rounds downrange. Mine was made in Sept 2011, so its an early one. There has been some comments on front sights breaking. Im sure Ruger will get a handle on the problem. It might take a while to work through the bad parts.

I just checked mine, and there IS a few thousands gap between the sight, and the slide body.

Ruger has had my mini 14 longer than I have had it. I had ejection problems, not sight problems, although I have read about people have some sight problems with the mini 14.

They are in the process of building me a new weapon and they said it should ship this week but I have not heard from them yet.

My point is this, although they have very good customer service, their quality control is very poor.
I'm getting pretty close to the 1,000 round mark on mine. No problems with the front sight (it has a gap.) Although it did take 31 (+1) rounds to tear the 10 ring off the target today. Only left me with 19 rounds to rapid fire the head.:)

OOOps. Update...mine blew off while firing. Called and my new one is on the way. Will have it replaced local.
I have 3000rnds through my SR1911 and the weapon has been totally flawless. Before I go to the range it is field stripped and cleaned with a thorough look over. The only issue has been an extremely dirty front sight dot due to the eastern bloc steel ammo that I occasionally shoot.
