You know S&W makes a great 686, very well finished and just a classic beauty.
But one or two things that I like better about the GP100 is
1. the grip frame , you can pretty much put a grip on it to make it the length of pull that fits you're hand. You can do this due to the grip frame not fitting to the edge of the grip. You can make the grip pretty much any size. It's a great design.
2. Front sight is just a breeze to replace. You can switch them out at will if you like.
My GP's are dead on shooters, very accurate for me and my steel plate shooting.

I have read a few comparisons and the two guns are pretty much a toss up depending on personal experience. I have never shot a 686 but always heard great stuff about them also.
I keep thinking about getting a 686 but I don't want to spend the bucks on anymore guns. My GP100 Match Champion is fine with me. Great trigger and built like a tank.

buster,
I originally bought my S&W 686 Competitor because I wanted a once in a lifetime special revolver (at least for me). Great gun but is it better than my GP's No not in my opinion and I shoot my GP's a lot more. You can never go wrong with a Ruger revolver.
