An emotional day,lost my ducks.

Yesterday evening I went out to put our 3 ducks in for the night like I always do and found that they had all been run over. I had put duck crossing signs up because fencing our entire property in is not something I could do money and work wise if even possible. I had already lost 1 to a predator but to run over 3 ducks and not even stop to tell the owner is just unexcusable. The speed limit through here is only 30 mph but people fly through here in excess of 45 mph all the time. I tried to train them to not cross the road but after 2 months I gave up. Maybe putting up a deaf child sign would help.I don't know. :(

Oh no!!!!! I'm so sorry for the loss of your ducks!!!!!
We have a terribly time on our road anymore.
People don't drive carefully or even the speed limit anymore.
In the last few years we've had several deaths on the road in front of us. Makes me so sad.
I'm really sorry this happened. Ducks are awesome. I'm sure they will be missed.
Sorry to hear that. I am hoping my little dog doesn't get run over because she chases cars. That little critter can run 25 mph and then dart across in front of a car. I hate to think about her getting run over.
You are lucky the people that ran them over didn't stop and say your ducks damaged their car. I knew two people that happened to. One was some guineas took out a ford p/up grill and the other ran over a dog and demanded $300 for repairs to fog light and splash panel.
I had guineas but the females, stupid birds, kept getting killed by predators. The male without any females and my pup chasing him decided to go up the street to a harem of guineas. We try and protect our critters but we can't always do that.

Ooh, that would severely lower my rationality quotient.
I'm really sorry to hear that SH. Some people are just cruel.
Yeah I'm thinking of trying to put up a fence or something if I can, don't really have any money but I read on a sister site that you can get a bunch of deer netting for $50 or so,I've just never heard of it or know where to get it.
Jerry,

Try talking to your local humane society about your dilemma. Sometimes they have extra money to help people out like you. Just tell them that your funding is very limited and what happened to your critters. They might be able to provide you with fencing. Might be plastic but that's better than nothing. And I know what you say about speed. Our street is a half mile long and a 25mph and we have people who drive 60 on it. You just can't fix stupid and there are a lot of stupid people out there.

Good advice about organized help. If it's out there. I my town it really ain't. BTW those high speed drivers mostly aren't stupid, they just don't care. The fix is to make them care. We can't control why they care, just that they do.
Time to dig some serious potholes Jerry. That ought to slow them idiots down.
Dang Jerry,
I sure hate to hear that,
I know how yall really were attached to them little guys.

Sorry man.

Jim
LOL on dig some pot holes.
Sorry to hear that SH. +1 on the potholes!

Digging potholes could attract official attention... but a couple strategically placed POTHOLES signs could work. Maybe with a drawing of a pot with holes in it, to confuse the issue.

I may try that. I figure it will cost probably from 2-300 dollars to fence in 1/2 my yard so it'll have to wait until tax time if I pay for it myself. If I can get some more ducks before then I'll just have to keep them in the building for now.
Post a mannequin wearing a full ISIS hijab and set a few wires leading to some strategically placed holes in the ground.
Think you could appeal to the city for a duck crossing sign SH? I've seen them before at parks and what not. Just a thought.

I would't dig up potholes. You'll just end up hitting them and that's no good.
Jerry,

We have trouble with feral cats at our house. We spent about $300.00 trying to trap them and have them neutered. We ran out of money and were at our wits end on how to handle the situation. There are different government entities that have money to help people out. I think if you go to the humane society, if they can't help you, then they can give you leads to other departments that have the resources to give you assistance. As far as the speeding situation, I would contact my local sheriff's office and explain what is going on. They can go to your local DMV and have signs posted without any cost to you. I did the same thing here. Not only did they post more signs, they also monitored the situation with deputy cars and wrote out some speeding tickets. They also have a car (unoccupied) that they can park with radar inside of it and catch them speeding.
Going back to your pet situation. It took us about a week of talking to the humane society and other entities before we finally got some results. They even provided cages and neutered the cats we caught and never charged us a dime. Don't give up. There is money out there to help people, it's just finding the right department. Best of luck!

Sorry to hear it. We have ducks, too. I have become quite endeared to them, and would be just as upset if they got hit, as I would any of our other animals.
