Where is it coming from? Manufacturer, distributor, middleman, or retailer?

It's not merely a measure of supply and demand. Economy of scales does not work that way. I keep hearing that manufacturers are ramping production.

So who is it? Who's profit margin is way above pre-what you might call it. Suppliers?

An increase in production does not mean that demand is not still exceeding supply. The fact that ammo is still scarce at the retail level makes it pretty clear that's the case.

Maybe when Walmart starts selling ammo again the prices will come down a bit.
I don't think you will find a box of 9mm at $8.00 any more, But it will be at a much lower price than $17.00 for a box of 50 cartridges.

I just rechecked the links posted and they are functional.

It smells like the following is what's happening. Retailers are hoarding and, as an example, instead of buying 1,000 cases they buy 10,000. And then either pay the distributor in advance or upon invoice presentation. Instead of net 30/60/90.

If you are a distributor to whom would you sell?

Of course, in light of the discovery of the President-elect's magical mystery vaccine published today, it might all be moot in short order. After all, Joey B. did promise that he was going to shutdown the virus as soon as he got elected to the Senate.

But unless the retailers did not extend their cash reserves, they should not lose a penny. Unless they had to take out loans to make the purchases. And I sure hope they got screwed on the interest rates. :)

With slimy Joe in office, that only means we pay for it.
Raising taxes only means we the consumer will pay the difference in higher prices. Then, add a little more taxes at the register.
Isn't that great, who in their right mind doesn't want to pay more taxes. More taxes on the federal level, more taxes on the state level and more taxes on the local level. I am elated that crooked, slimy Joe is to be elected. I should just mail all of my income that corrupt crook so he can buy himself more $3,000.00 shiny suits. With his dirty side kick vowing to abolish the 2nd. Its a perfect combo for socialism (communism w/o the violence) just vote for it.

There are certainly some retailer who are taking advantage of current situations and jacking up their prices. Manufactures are ramping up production but just like with firearms they are in no way making enough ammo to meet the demand. Some retailers place 1 or 2 orders a year for ammo from manufactures and then all of a sudden ordered more ammo when panic buying started than they have in the last two or three years combined. I can speak from experience that even if you have a dealer account, cost from the manufacturer has gone up as well. Manufacturers are having to pay more for raw material and components. Ammo also is made in batches and manufacturers produce ammo for contracts based on a time table of size and when the client needs it. So many places ordering ammo at once means shipping cost will go up as well. When you are a large distributor who orders 10,000,000 rounds and want it next month shipping cost goes way up.

Then we end up with 9mm at $.60 a round for the consumer.

The Democrat Politicians want it this way ! Its a big scam I seen a box of 50 9mm ball sell for $30.00 a box and it was the cheap stuff at $7.00 a box last year.

Politics is the main contributor to the increase in ammo buying. That being said you can't say the dems want it this way or that it is a scam. I just outlined why the cost has increased so much. $30 a box actually comes out to $.60 per round like I said. Cost is up because more people want ammo and manufactures are not able to keep up at this point. Ammo sales are up over 139% this year over last year. They do not want us buying ammo as we have this year. Ammo was so cheap pre-2020 because it sat on shelves forever since people were not buying it. This is basic economics of supply and demand. Not a tin-foil hat idea of what the dems are doing behind the curtain. If you wanted a stockpile of ammo on the cheap, the time to buy was 2016-2019.

Just this last week Vista made a statement that they are one year behind schedule with contracts totaling more than a billion dollars. https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/vista-outdoors-ammunition-backlog-billion

So who is it?
Local brick and mortar have been fair, so that leaves one to believe it's the online shops gouging. The other interesting thing that's come to light from various people on the internet is the scalpers lining up every day at the big box stores and then selling it on various sites. What is interesting to learn many are not even gun owners or enthusiast.

And these people are buying up the guns and reselling them. What they are doing is preying on the stimulus money. And we have enough idiots out here willing to pay the price, especially the new gun owners who really don't know what the prices use to be. And as always we have the hoarders who anytime they get paranoid go on an ammo buying spree.

But also remember the government always gets first dibs on the ammo, and because of the riots last years they no doubt bought millions of rounds as they did back in the Obama era. This is why we saw .40S&W on the cheap when they went back to 9mm.

One thing is for certain we will never see pre pandemic prices again.
It's taking the fun right out of it.
