I'm a n00b to Ruger but an owner of various firearms and came across the Alaskan when I was searching for something to chest holster while I'm hunting, fishing, camping or hiking.
Went with the .44 because it will handle anything in Northern California where I'm located like black bears or mountain lions.

I'd really like to see some Alaskans with wood grips...

Always wanted the Alaskan but I wanted the bear repellent, 454 Cassel. Something about that firearm with that cartridge, I feel as though I could go for a hike in Alaska and not feel 100 percent safe(being caught of gaurd) but knowing that the round would certainly put a brown bear down if hit in the right places. Must be fantastic in. 44 as well I could go either way but prefer the security of the 454.
Beauty of a revolver!

You have the versatility of either 45 Colt or 454 which is great for Alaska, but he should be fine in California with the 44 mag. 44 Mag gives 44 Special or multiple bullet options in 44 mag. :)

Excellent choice and a sweet wheel gun. Congrats!
