On my daughters 10/22 she has to have the bolt locked open to bring it to 4h rifle. We are having a heck of a time to get the bolt to shut after it's was locked back. Is there a trick or is this a problem?
Look into getting one of these. It'll be the best $12 you ever spent. https://www.volquartsen.com/products/158-automatic-bolt-release
The factory bolt release can be modified to the auto configuration in about 5 mins. with a carbide bit and a Dremel tool.
I went cheaper and lazier. Just spent an evening working the thing until it was intuitive. So from the bolt locked back... I pull the bolt further back until it stops... Then, while holding the bolt back, I take my index finger and push up and slightly forward at the indent in the release... Then let go and business... Hmmm. I'll try to resize the pics so it's a little neater to look at.
I chose to preform the modification myself. I have the tools, and experience. I had it out twice to get the shape right, for a BEAUTIFUL release. Plenty of information out there. Image search for "10/22 Auto Bolt Release" I once saw $6 price on aftermarket part. Good alternative for many. This is the one mod that makes the 10/22 work like it should.
