Back in 2007, Sturm, Ruger released its SR9 pistol, a double-action only polymer framed 9mm that picked up where the P85/95 series left off. A few years after that, they brought out the SR40, which is the same design yet in 40S&W. Finally, after a six year wait, Ruger has listened to the shooting public and brought out the gun in John Browning's beautiful 45ACP chambering.

The SR45

Design

When the SR9 came out, it was set to do what Ruger P85/89/95 has never really pulled off-- being a large caliber pistol in a slim, ergonomic profile. Say what you want about the P85, it may have been reliable, inexpensive, and accurate, but it's darn bulky. Well the SR9 fixed that, producing a striker fired combat handgun that still used a large capacity double stacked magazine (that held 17 rounds) whose overall width was just 1.18-inches. Now that's slim, jack.

The SR45 is the same thing, offering a full-sized 45ACP 10-shot double stacked magazine with 10+1 capacity while just having a maximum width of 1.27-inches at its thickest point. Firing double action only (DAO) from a reliable short recoil action with a locked breech, the gun uses a pre-set Glock style trigger for safety.

Features Features Features

If you have heard of it, or wanted it, odds the feature on your list is on this gun. Besides the standard 3-dot combat sights that are raked forward for faster unholstering and reversible backstrap (for flat or arched grip), there is also a fully ambi magazine release and positive thumb safety lever. An underbarrel accessory rail comes standard for your lighting and laser needs. Taking a page from XD's playbook, the SR45 has a huge loaded chamber indicator that can be both seen and felt in low light conditions.

(The large loaded chamber indicator is shown on the top of the slide by the ejection port. You can tell from this picture that the pistol in question is unloaded as the indicator sticks up like a ramp when loaded. Also note the adjustable high-profile rear sight)

The only thing different we would like to see is better surface controls and the possibility of a compact SR45c version in the works for those who would still rather not carry an 8-inch long pistol for a CCW.

Specs

  • CALIBER: .45 ACP
  • BARREL: 4.5 inches
  • OA LENGTH: 8 inches
  • MAX WIDTH: 1.27 inches
  • WEIGHT: 30.15 ounces (unloaded)
  • GRIPS: Glass-filled nylon
  • SIGHTS: Adjustable three-dot
  • ACTION: Semi-auto
  • FINISH: Black nitride or brushed stainless steel
  • CAPACITY: 10+1

Comparison

When compared to other polymer framed 45s on the market, the Ruger is well placed to make a name for itself. The Glock 21 has a slight bonus over the SR45 in the fact that it has a 13-round magazine, is the same width, and is about a half inch shorter. However, the G21 is a little heavier when loaded and tends to run a bit higher MSRP. XDs (M) series 4.5 has similar specs to the SR45, but loses the width battle. Moreover, if you can get an American made Ruger over a Croatian made XD, why wouldn't you?

Overall, with a price set at just $529, the SR45 is going to be hard to beat.
